What is epilepsy?
A condition that occurs due to abnormal brain activity involving recurrent seizures
What are seizures?
Result from transient, uncontrolled electrical discharge across cerebral cortex
How does epilepsy affect the eyes?
Depending on the area of the brain, rapid eye blinking, staring, eye deviation, visual field loss, visual hallucinations
How is epilepsy treated?
Medications, dietary therapy, devices and surgery
What are antiepileptics?
Drugs used to stabilise the membrane, to help inhibit or enhance inhibitory pathway
What are the most commonly used drugs?
Phenytoin, sodium valproate, carbamazepine, lamotrigine, levetiracetam and topiramate
How does phenytoin affect the eyes?
Can cause nystagmus, blurred vision and diplopia
How does Carbamazepine affect the eyes?
Causes blurred vision, diplopia, conjunctivitis, lenticular opacities
How does Lamotrigine affect the eyes?
Can cause blurred vision or diplopia
How does Gabapentin affect the eyes?
Causes diplopia, nystagmus and amblyopia
