Rapid onset
High temperature, generally unwell
Stridor
Drooling of saliva

Diagnosis
A
If epiglottitis suspected then investigations should not be performed
Lateral xray of the neck shows thumb sign

Management
A
Avoid distressing patient
Intubation may be required
Oxygen
IV antibiotics (ceftriaxone)
Steroids (dexamethasone)

Prognosis
A
Most recover without requiring intubation
Common complication is epiglottic abscess
