Drug overdose Flashcards
Paracetamol OD management
Activated charcoal if ingested <1 hour ago
NAC
Liver transplant
Salicylate OD management
Urinary alkalinization with IV bicarbonate
Haemodialysis
Opioid/opiate OD managment
Naloxone
Benzodiazepine OD management
Flumazenil
Majority are managed with supportive care only due to risk of seizures with flumazenil
Generally only given with severe or iatrogenic overdoses
Tricyclic antidepressant OD management
IV bicarbonate may reduce risk of seizures and arrhythmias in severe toxicity
Dialysis is ineffective in removing tricyclics
Lithium OD management
Mild-moderate may respond to volume resuscitation with normal saline
Haemodialysis may be needed in severe toxicity
Sodium bicarbonate is sometimes used but there is little evidence to support this
Warfarin OD management
Vitamin K
Prothrombin complex
Heparin OD management
Protamine sulphate
Beta blockers OD management
If bradycardic give atropine
In resistant cases glucagon may be used
Ethylene glycol OD management
Fomepizole inhibits alcohol dehydrogenase
Haemodialysis in refractory cases
Methanol OD management
Fomepizole or ethanol
Haemodialysis
Organophosphate insecticides OD management
