Epidemiology 12-More on Risk, Estimating the potential for prevention Flashcards

Q

What is relative risk ?

What is attributable risk ?

A

Attributable risk

•Relative risk

–Measure of the strength association

–Deriving a causal inference

  • How much of the disease that occurs can be attributed to a certain exposure?
  • Attributable risk

–Measure of the amount or proportion of disease incidence (or disease risk) that can be attributed to a specific exposure

Q

What is an example of attributable risk with smokers and lung cancer?

A

Attributable risk

How much of the lung cancer risk experienced by smokers can be attributed to smoking?

•How much disease can be prevented if eliminate the exposure?

Q

What is the goal of attributable risk ? Can we measure attribuble risk ?

A

How much of the risk (incidence) of disease can we hope to prevent if we are able to eliminate exposure to the agent in question?

•We can calculate the attributable risk

–for exposed persons (the attributable risk of lung cancers in smokers)

–or the attributable risk for the total population (the attributable risk in smokers and non-smokers)
