Q

.What is the definition of epidemiology ? What three things are not randomly distributed in the human population ? What two things does this information do ? What are the two factors that control epidemiology ?

A

Epidemiology

•Study of how disease is distributed in populations and the factors that influence or determine this distribution.

  • Diseases, illness, and ill health are not randomly distributed in human populations.
  • Characteristics that predispose- who is a risk,
  • Characteristics that protect- so they can try to protect them

•Interaction of genetic and environmental factors

Q

.In epidemiology, what is etiology, and what is the goal ? What purpose of Epidemiology in a community.

A

Objectives-Epidemiology

•Etiology/cause

  • factors that increase a person’s risk for a disease
  • prevention programs
  • Determine the extent of disease found in the community.
  • Critical for planning health services and facilities, and training of health care providers

Q

What are three public policy that Epidiomolgy build ?

What does all these hope to do ?

A

Objectives-Epidemiology

  • To provide the foundation for developing public policy relating to environmental problems, genetic issues and health promotion.
  • Types of regulations
  • Occupations associated with increased risk of disease

Q

How to identify subgroups in a population that may be high risk for disease ?

What does modifiable mean ?

What are or not modifiable factors , and what is the goal ?

A

Prevention

  • To identify subgroups in the population who are at high risk for disease.
  • Screening programs for early disease detection

Can be manuplulated, can be changed

  • If we to identify such groups, we can modify those factors
  • Not modifiable factors: age, sex, ethnic group
  • Modifiable factors: obesity, diet, alcohol, etc.
  • Prevention programs
