They are extrinsic factors that affect agents and the opportunity for exposure.
- Physical factors: geology and climate
- Biological factors: insects (transmitting agents)
- Socioeconomic factors: crowding, sanitation, availability of health services.

A
- behaviour, genetics, immunological status, nutrition
