Blood Glucose and Homeostasis Flashcards
Insulin
A hormone released by the pancreas to lower the glucose levels in the bloodstream.
Glucagon
A hormone released by Alpha ells in the pancreas to increase glucose levels in the bloodstream by releasing stored glycogen from fat, muscle cells, and liver.
Glycogen
The form of glucose when stored as polysaccharides inside fat and muscle cells and the liver.
Brain
Uses up glucose when it requires energy.
Feedback mechanism
When the response alters the stimulus
When blood glucose is low
The pancreas receives signals to inhibit insulin production and starts glucagon production.
When blood glucose is high
If blood glucose is high, the body receives signals to inhibit glucagon production and start insulin production.
