Epidemiologic Triad Flashcards
1
Q
what is the underlying principle of epidemiology?
A
disease does not occur randomly in a population
2
Q
describe the epidemiologic triad
A
- agent
- host
- environment
helps us:
-describe current status of disease
-look for patterns
-comparison between groups
-describe changes over time
-establish causation
3
Q
what are agent factors?
A
- types of agents:
-biological: bacterial, viral, parasites, fungi, prion
-physical: floods, wildfires
-chemical - infectivity
- pathogenicity
- antigenicity
- virulence
- mode of transmission
4
Q
what are host factors?
A
- susceptibility to infection: genetics, vaccination status, prior/current disease, age, stressors (transport, exercise)
- shedders:
-healthy animals may shed infectious agents
-stress may induce shedding
5
Q
what are environmental factors?
A
- heat
- humidity
- wind
- stocking density
- water quality
- ventilation: barn, arena
