Epi Flashcards
a finite clinical manifestation of abnormal and excessive excitation of a population of cortical neuron
seizure
syndrome characterized by chronic, recurrent seizures unproved by systemic or neurologic insults
epilepsy
sequence of events that convert a normal neuronal network into a hyperexcitable network
epileptogenesis
involvr loss of awereness and lack of responsiveness
generalization
initally aware and responsive but then loss of repsonsiveness and memory over time as seizures full generalize
secondarilygeneralized
aware and responsive (focal)
simple partial
initially aware and responsive but may have some memory impairment (focal with minor spread)
complex partial
duration of 60-90 seconds
simple partial
duration of 15-120, awareness memeory and/or consciousness may be imparied as seizure progresses
complex partial
begin as simpleand/or complex partial then fully generalize, duration of 30-240 sec
secondarily generalized seizures
confusion, somnolence, with or without transient focal deficit can last minutes-hours
postictal phase
main mechanism for ASD’s
- enhancement of GABA-mediated inhibition
- reduction of excitatory transmision (ie glutamate)
- mod of ionic conductance ( ie na, ca, k)
