define disability
any self perceived limitation in activity resulting from a long term health condition or health problem expected to last 6 months or more and is not completely eliminated by an assistive device
whats an impairment
a reduction in function relative to the usual standards of living for a population. these can be eliminated with assisstive devices such as hearing aids or glasses

what is the medical model of disability
this model views disability as a problem that resides within the individual themselves, there is something wrong with them only. these things are the focus and they thus need to be diagnosed and treated to improve the individuals condition. that is thought to be the only way to improve their condition
what is the social model of disability
this model focuses on the external causes of disability and how societies view is disabling. that it is society setting the stardards for normativity and if you do not meet these standards you are disabled.
what is the whaanau ora model
this model sees the person with disability as neither a victim nor as a personal tragedy, rather as a family member. as they are seen in this light we are able to treat them well in positive light with needed reasources - allowing us to support the person. so this model is more of a collectivist approach to things.
what is ableism
a framework of thought and action that prefers certain minds and bodies over others. its a form of discrimination where the abled body is seen as being superior to that of the disabled body.
define carer
a person whos primary role in the family is to support and meet the personal healthcare needs of another family member doing so over their own health for the most part. many people come to gain this role unexpectedly through birth of child or spousal health condition.
what is a caregiver
this is a person whos paid job it is to care for someone who has a disability
what is a graduate carer
a person who was previously a carer but no longer is as the person they were caring for has died, recovered or been put into a care facility.
why is the number of people needing care on the rise
due to new zealands aging population. so degenerative conditions is on the rise as increasing age of people increases the prevelance of those disease types
what is a young carer
children under the age of 18 who have to provide regular and ongoing care to a family member who is in some way disabled and cannot take full care of themselves
