What are corrections?
The structure, policies, and programs delivered by governments for persons convicted of criminal offenses.
not for profit organizations or the public to punish
What are the two types of corrections?
Non-carceral (non-institutional) and carceral (institutional)
What are non-carceral corrections?
Community corrections, alternative to confinement, programs for offenders released from correctional institutions
What are carceral corrections?
Jails and correctional institutions operated by
the provinces and territories and the
federal government
What is absolute/ conditional discharge?
When the presiding judge discharges an offender in cases where an accused person either pleads guilty or is found guilty of an offence
What are the exceptions to absolute/ conditional discharge?
When there is a mandatory minimum sentence, or the offense is punishable by imprisonment for 14 years to life
What is a suspended sentence?
Convicted offenders are provided with the opportunity to avoid incarceration by abiding by the conditions of a probation order for a period from 1-3 years
What is diversion?
Programs that are designed to keep offenders
from being processed further into the formal
criminal justice system
What are the pros of diversion?
Reduces cost, minimizes social stigmatization, assists offenders in addressing the specific factors related to their offending
What is victim-offender mediation?
Programs that take a restorative approach, the victim, and offender get to address their feelings and concern, a neutral mediator helps resolve conflict, addresses the consequences of the offense, creates understanding for each other
What is net widening?
Persons who would have been released outright by police or not charged by the crown counsel now become involved in the justice system because of various diversion programs.

What is a conditional sentence?
Sentences that can be given to convicted persons who would otherwise be incarcerated for less than two years
What are the rules of conditional sentences?
To be served in the community, must fulfill certain conditions, not on probation, failure to comply results in the offender being returned to court
When is probation assigned?
In a case with no minimum penalty, the judge may place the offender on probation for up to 3 years
What do applicants for probation officer positions require?
A university degree, strong verbal and communication skills, case management and supervision, problem solving skills
