Enzymes in digestion Flashcards
What’s the role of digestive enzymes?
They break down big molecules
Carbohydrases convert carbohydrates into…
small sugars like maltose
Protease convert proteins into…
amino acids
Lipase convert lipids into…
Glycerol and fatty acids
Where does the break down of carbohydrate (starch) happen?
The salivary glands, the pancreas, the small intestine
Where does the break down of protein happen?
The stomach, the pancreas and the small intestine
Where does the break down of lipids happen?
The pancreas and the small intestine
What does bile do?
Bile neutralises the stomach acid (so the enzymes can work best in the alkaline conditions) and emulsified fats (creates bigger surface area)
Where is bile produced?
Liver
