Cardiovascular disease Flashcards
Stents
- keep arteries open
- tubes inserted inside arteries, to keep them open allowing blood to pass through
Statins
- reduce cholestrol in the blood
- drugs to redugs the amount of bad cholestrol present in the bloodstream. slow down rate of fatty deposits forming
Positives of stents
-lowers the risk of a heart attack in people with coronary heart disease
-affective for a long time
recovery time from surgery is quick
Negatives of stents
- risk of infection during surgery
- risk of patient developing blood clot near stent
Advantages of statins
- reduce risk of strokes, coronary heart disease and heart attacks
- increase the amount of a beneficial type of cholestrol
- helps prevent some other diseases
Disadvantages of statins
- risk of forgetting to take them
- negative side affects e.g. headaches, memory loss
- take time for their effect to kick in
Artificial heart
- mechanical pump to replaced damage heart
- heart is now able to to function properly and pump blood around the body
Valve replacement
- biological or mechanical valve can now move the blood in the correct direction
- replaces a damaged valve with a working one
Why would some people want a mechanical valve instead of an tissue valve
- lasts for a long time
- less likely to get rejected
Why would some people want a tissue valve instead of an mechanical valve
-mechanical are more likely to get blood clots around it
