Enzymes CH 3.3 Flashcards
Catalyst
substance that speeds up a reaction without being permanently altered
Sucrose + H2O –>
glucose + fructrose
Transition State
a reactive mode that requires an input of energy
Activation Energy
the energy input required to reach the transition state
Substrate
the name for the reactants in an enzyme catalyzed reaction
Active Site
the part on an enzyme that the substrate binds to
Enzyme-Substrate Complex
the binding of the active site of the enzyme and the substrate which is held together by one or more means, such as hydrogen bonding, electrical attraction or temporary covalent bonding.
Cofactors
inorganic ions such as copper, zinc and iron that bind to certain enzymes
Coenzyme
carbon-containing molecule that is required for the action of one or more enzymes
Prosthetic groups
non-amino acid atoms or molecular groupings that are permanently bound to their enzymes.
