Enzymes and digestion Flashcards
If enzymes are biological catalysts what are catalysts
A substance which increases the speed of a reaction without being used up or changed in the reaction
What do enzymes do
Speed up the chemical redactions
Why do enzymes have specific shapes
For the enzyme to work the substance has to fit its special shape.
At first what happens when the temperature is increased in a reaction.
Rate of reaction increases
What happens if it gets too hot
It is denatured. This is when the binds holding the enzyme break , causing its special shape to be destroyed this then stops the enzyme working
What happens if the ph is too high or too low
It effects bonding holding enzyme together denaturing the enzyme
What oh do enzymes best work at
It depends on the conditions the enzyme is working in
What big molecules can’t fit through walls of digestive system
Starch
Fat
Protein
What does the amylase break down and what into
Starch into sugars
What does protease break down and what into
Protein into amino acid
What does lipases break down and what into
Fats into glycerol and fatty acids
Where is bile produced and where is it stored
Produced in the liver
Stored in the gall bladder
What does bile do
Neutralises acid added to food in the stomach and makes conditions akaline
Where do the bile enzymes work best
Small intestines
