Enzymes Flashcards
What is an enzyme?
An enzyme is a biological catalyst that speeds up the rate of reaction without being changed or getting used up.
Explain how enzymes work
Enzymes have active sites, these active sites have certain shapes which allow substrates to fit into them. Once the substrates enter the active sites, it is split apart and broken down. This is how enzymes break down food.
Formula to calculate rate of reaction
Rate = 1000/time
Name the enzyme and the product involved in breaking down Starch
amylase breaks down starch into maltose
Name the enzyme and the product involved in breaking down proteins
Protease breaks down proteins into Amino acids
Name the enzyme and the product involved in breaking down lipids
Lipase breaks down lipids into glycerol and fatty acids
