Digestion Flashcards
Salivary Glands
Produces amylase in the saliva.
Gullet (oesophagus)
Sends down food to the stomach
Stomach
The stomach pummels the food with its muscular walls. It also produces protease, amylase and lipase. It produces Hydrochloric acid which kills bacteria and gives the right pH for the enzymes.
Liver
This is where the bile is produced. Bile neutralises stomach acids and emulsifies fats.
Pancreas
Produces protease, amylase and lipase. It releases these into the small intestines.
Gall bladder
Where the bile is stored and released into the small intestine.
Large intestine
Where excess water is absorbed from the food.
Small intestine
Food is pushed through by muscular walls - peristalsis. It produces protease, amylase and lipase enzymes to complete digestion. This is also where the digested food is absorbed out of the digestive system and into the blood.
Rectum
Where faeces is stored.
