Enzymes Flashcards
What do enzymes bind with?
Specific substances (lock and key)
How would you describe an enzyme and what do they do in general terms?
Enzymes are small globular proteins. They support processes.
What do enzymes do to reactions?
Enzymes catalyse a reaction (makes faster)
With enzymes, what do we try and do?
With enzymes we try to reduce how much energy is wasted making energy.
With training, what can we increase?
With training we can increase the abundance of some key enzymes.
What does synthesis mean?
Build/ help to build things
Production of
(Enzymes can synthesis)
What are the 2 things enzymes can do ?
Build things or break things down
What is an enzyme substrate complex?
An enzyme substrate complex is a temporary molecule formed when an enzyme comes into contact with its substrate.
What do enzymes almost always end in?
“Ase”
What happens when the substrate enters the active site?
Without its substrate an enzyme is a slightly different shape. The substrate causes a conformational change, or shape change, when the substrate enters the active site.
Efficiency depends on…. (3)
- substrate and enzyme concentration
- temperate (40* is optimum any more and they change shape which doesn’t work for lock and key)
- pH
What is Oxidisation?
Removal of electrons from an ion, molecule or compound.
What is Reduction?
Reduction is the gain of electrons.
What are the couples reactions oxidation and reduction called?
These are called Redox Reactions
What does OIL RIG MEAN?
Oxidation is loss
Reduction is gain
