Enzymes Flashcards
Where are the instructions for making proteins found?
In the cells genes
What two things do chemical reactions involve
Either being split up or joined together
What is a substrate
A molecule that is changed in a reaction
What is an active site
Where the substrate joins on to the enzyme
How many reactions do enzymes usually speed up
One
After the chemical reaction on the enzyme what happens
The enzyme remains unchanged and the substrate is released as products
What two factors affect enzymes
Temperature and PH
What is PH
A measure of how acidic or alkaline a solution is
When do enzymes work best
At their optimum temperature and PH
What does changing the temperature do to an enzyme
Changes the rate of an enzyme controlled reaction
What happens if the temperature gets to hot
Some of the bonds holding the enzyme together break, this changes the shape of the enzymes active site so the substrate will no longer fit and the enzyme becomes denatured
What happens if the PH is to high or low
It interferes with the bonds holding the enzyme together which changes the shape of the enzymes active sit and denatures it
What is the definition of an enzyme
Enzymes are proteins produced by living things that speed up chemical reactions
