Enzymes Flashcards
Metabolism
Sum of all the chemical reactions occurring in an organism
Anabolism
When energy is used to convert simpler molecules into more complex ones
Ex: photosynthesis
Catabolism
Breaking down of complex molecules into simpler forms to release energy
Ex: digestion
Catalyst
A substance the speeds up a chemical reaction without itself being used in the reaction
Enzymes
Proteins that speed up a reaction without being used up in the reaction
Substrate
The molecule with which the enzyme reacts with
Product
The substance the enzyme forms
Specificity
Refers to an enzymes ability to react with only one substrate
Active site
Part of the enzyme that combines with the substrate
Denaturation
When an enzyme loses its shape and can no longer carry out its function
Bio processing
The use of living cells or their components such as enzymes, to make useful products
Immobilised enzymes
Enzymes that are attached to or trapped in an inert in insoluble material
Bioreactor
A type of vessel where bio processing takes place
