Enzymes Flashcards
What is an enzyme?
A biological catalyst
Enzyme facts
-To build and break molecules
-Can denature with extremes of pH and high temperatures
What is activation energy?
The minimum energy needed for a chemical reaction to take place
What is a substrate?
The target molecule that the enzymes active site binds to
What is an active site?
The pocket on an enzyme, which allows the substance to bind
How was the induced to fit model work?
-As the substrate approaches it’s proximity causes a conformational change to the active site and tertiary structure of the entire enzyme
-This allows the active site to become functional allowing enzyme-substrate complex to form
What are factors that can affect the rate of reaction?
-concentration of substrate
-temperature
-increase/decrease in PH
Why does pH effect it?
A change in pH alters the charges on the amino acid that make up the active site preventing an enzyme-substrate complex from forming
