enzymes Flashcards
what is an enzyme ?
biological catalyst that speeds up the useful chemical reactions in the body
active site of an enzyme
section of an enzyme that has a specific shape to allow the substrate to attach to it perfectly
substrate of an enzyme
substance that attaches perfectly to the active site
lock and key model
substrate fits into active site just like a lock and a key
enzymes involved in digestion
amylase , protease, lipase
amylase
starch –> maltose + other simple sugars
protease
proteins –> amino acids
lipase
lipids –> fatty acids + glycerol
what are the 3 factors that affect enzyme activity ?
pH
temperature
substrate concentration
effect of pH on enzyme activity
as pH increases activity increases
until the optimum pH is reached
past this point, activity would start to decrease
enzyme active site beings to change shape, substrate can no longer fit
this is an enzyme denaturing
effect of temperature on enzyme activity
as temp increases activity increases
until optimum temp is reached
past this point, activity would start to decrease
enzyme active site begins to change shape, substrate can no longer fit
this is an enzyme denaturing
effect of substrate concentration on enzyme activity
more substrate concentration, faster rate of reaction
true up to a certain point
past the point, all active sites are full so no more substrate molecules can react
so the reaction wouldn’t get any faster
