cells Flashcards
what is a cell ?
building block of an organism
what are the two types of cell?
eukaryotic
prokaryotic
What is a eukaryotic cell ?
contains a nucleus
What is a prokaryotic cell ?
cell does not contain a nucleus
parts of an animal cell
cell membrane
cytoplasm
mitochondria
ribosomes
nucleus
parts of a plant cell
cell membrane
cytoplasm
mitochondria
ribosomes
nucleus
chloroplasts
vacuole
cell wall
function of nucleus
controls activities of cell , contains dna
function of cytoplasm
contains special enzymes to allow chemical reactions to occur
function of ribosomes
synthesise proteins
function of mitochondria
site of cellular respiration
function of cell membrane
allows substances to enter and leave the cell
function of vacuole
contains cell sap that makes the plant cell turgid
function of chloroplasts
contain green pigment called ‘chlorophyll’
this absorbs light for photosynthesis
function of cell wall
provides the plant cell structure
What type of cell is a bacterial cell?
prokaryotic
What are the components of a bacterial cell?
chromosomal dna (no nucleus)
plasmids
cell membrane
ribosomes
flagellum
function of plasmids
contain genes for the bacteria such as antibiotic resistance
function of flagellum
allows bacteria to move or ‘swim’
What is a specialised cell?
a cell that has certain adaptations to help it carry out its function
examples of specialised cell
egg cell , sperm cell , ciliated epithelial cell
adaptations of egg cell
- large cytoplasm makes space for developing embryo
- membrane closes after fertilisation to avoid polyspermy
- haploid nucleus (half the number of chromosomes in a normal cell)
- egg cell also carries female dna
how many chromosomes are there in a haploid nucleus
23 chromosomes, in other body cells there are 46
adaptations of sperm cell
-flagellum allows it to swim towards the egg cell
- mitochondria supplies it with energy
- acrosomes allow it to dig into the egg’s cell membrane
- haploid nucleus
- streamlined shape allows it to swim to the egg faster
adaptations of ciliated epithelial cell
- line the surfaces of organs
- some of them have little hairs called cilia
- move substances in one direction along the surface of a tissue
