what is an enzyme?
proteins that act as biological catalysts by accelerating chemical reactions. enzymes convert substrates into different molecules known as products
what is a substrate?
the substance on which an enzyme acts
what is induced fit?
when the substrate changes shape to fit into the enzymes active site
what is locke and key?
when the enzymes active site changes shape for the substrate to fit
how do enzymes work?
they weaken bonds which lowers the activation energy
what is activation energy?
the minimum amount of energy needed
what are inhibitors?
a molecule that binds to an enzyme and decreases its activity
what is a competitive inhibitor?
a molecule that blocks the active site of an enzyme
what is a non competitive inhibitor?
a molecule that attaches to an enzyme and changes the shape of the active site
what is lipase?
an enzyme that breaks down fat
what is amylase?
an enzyme that digests carbohydrates
what is lactase?
an enzyme that breaks down dairy products
what does denature mean?
destroy or break down

in the ribosome
