Enzyme Structure and Function Flashcards
What is the active site?
region in an enzymes three dimensional structure that is directly involved in catalysis
What is the reactant in an enzyme-catalyzed reaction called?
substrate
What does the active site model mean?
also known as the lock and key hypothesis, states that the substrate and active are perfectly complementary
What does the induced fit model state?
states that the substrate and active site differ slightly in structure and that the binding of the substrate induces a conformational change in the enzyme
What is a recognition pocket?
pocket in the enzymes structure which attracts certain residues on substrate polypeptides
What is a cofactor?
metal ions or small molecules required for activity in many enzymes
What is a coenzyme?
when a cofactor is an organic molecule
