environmental monitoring Flashcards
what are some aspects that are monitored routinely?
chemicals- nitrates, ammonium, ph co2
radiation
biotic- animals and plants especially those sensetive to change
microbes- especially for areas that are used for recreation e.g lakes and rivers which could be unsafe if microbe levels are dangerous
how can monitoring be done? e.g experiment
may involve using transects or random sampling of areas often experiments are repeated over time and in different seasons to assess the impact
what is environmental monitoring?
physical and biological measurements that are made over a period of time
physical measurement example is Ph , drainage or water flow
monitors the effects, effectiveness and measures environmental impact of conservation and re introduction programmes
environmental impact assessments are needed before work such as construction can occur
this process of monitoring and assessments helps political bodies make decisions based on sound scientific data about the impact of projects on the environment and to consider alternatives when necessary
