deforestation Flashcards

1
Q

what is deforestation?

A

land cleaered in order to grow food and livestock

large areas of woodland are cleared and burnt using large machines which compact the ground so roads need to be built

Q

what happens to succession in areas of deforestation?

A

succession is less likely to occur ( succession is the recovery of an ecosystem and ability to regenerate after the forest has been cleared)

this leads to soil erosion

this means that tree seedlings are unable to grow/ develop due to the soil erosion as the top layer of soil contains essential nutrients for growth , seedlings will struggle to acess water and minerals so cant grow

this process is desertification

what does soil erosion cause?

A

desertification

Q

what can deforestation lead to ? ( what are the negative effects)

A

destruction of natural habitats

decrease in native biodiversity

succession from cleared land cant occur because top soil layer is lost

loss of valuable plants that could have medicinal uses

increase in soil erosion- increase in nutrient loss

increase sediment deposit into water ways

contributes to global warming as fewer plants to absorb CO2

Q

what are the conservation methods for deforestation ?

A

coppicing - woodland is divided into different areas to be cut down in rotation
trees are cut to the stump and wood re grows from the stump - trees produce straight stems which can be harvested

intriduction of protected areas and replanting of native species within woodlands can also help preserve species and promote biodiversity

9
Q

what does getting timber without deforestation allow?

A

succession can happen after the trees are removed so the forest will be able to regenerate for future harvesting
