agricultural exploitation Flashcards
there is an increasing population that needs to be fed
we need to produce more food but also conserve the environment and biodiversity
as there is an increasing population that needs to be fed what do we need to do?
produce more food but also conserve the environment and biodiversity
what is agriculture?
producing food for human consumption in order to meet demand
what 3 things to agriciluturalists do to meet the growing demand of food
created larger fields by removing hedges
cultivated monocultures- growing single genetically identical crops
increased the use of fertilisers and pesticides
what are the effects of agriculture ?
hedges provide valuable habitats for wildlife, including some pest species and their predators. They also provide “wildlife corridors” allowing mobile species to travel to different areas to disperse species and find mates. so removal of these hedges causes loss of species e.g pests
monoculture- if pests invade the monoculture they can increase memebers rapidly and a monoculture is less likely to sustain a variety of the pests predators which may keep their numbers under control
fertilisers can cause eutrophication of nearby water bodies - leach into rivers
persticides harm benificial species aswell as pests and can cause them to decline in numbers
what is the negative effect of cutting down hedges?
provide valuable habitats for wildlife, including some pest species and their predators. They also provide “wildlife corridors” allowing mobile species to travel to different areas to disperse species and find mates.
what is the negative of monoculture ?
if pests invade the monoculture they can increase memebers rapidly and a monoculture is less likely to sustain a variety of the pests predators which may keep their numbers under control
what is the negative of using fertilises?
fertilisers can cause eutrophication of nearby water bodies - leach into rivers
what is the negative of using pesticides?
harm benificial species as well as pests and can cause them to decline in numbers
what is monoculture?
growing a single genetically identical crop
( same crop grown)
