Products of catalytic cracking
Aromatic hydrocarbons
How is nitrogen monoxide produced
High pressure and temperature in a car engine cause the nitrogen and oxygen atoms from the air to react together
Nitrogen monoxide equation
N2 + O2 –> 2NO
Nitrogen dioxide equation
2NO + O2 —> 2NO2
Why is carbon monoxide bad news
Poisonous
Binds to the same sites on haemoglobin molecules as oxygen so oxygen cannot bind and cannot be transported around the body
How is carbon monoxide removed from exhaust gases
Catalytic converters
Why are carbon particles.l bad news
Soot
Causes breathing problems
Build up in engines so they don’t work
How are oxides of nitrogen produced
High pressure and high temperature in car engine causes the nitrogen and oxygen atoms from the atmosphere to react and bind
What does ground level ozone cause
Smog
Irritates eyes
Aggregates respiratory problems
Lung damage
Why is sulfur dioxide bad news
Dissolves in moisture in air to form sulfuric acid
Acid rain
What does acid rain detstroy
Trees Vegetation Corrodes buildings Statues Causes lakes to be acidic and kills fish
How is subdue dioxide removed from the atomosphere
Via wet scrubbing
Powdered calcium carbonate or calcium oxide is mixed with water to form an alkaline slurry. Acidic sulfur dioxide tracts with the calcium in the alkaline slurry and forms calcium sulfate which is harmless
