Envi scie exam Flashcards
surroundings that have the conditions for living organisms to operate.
Environment
Derived from the French word
which means surroundings.
Components of Environment (4 interlinking systems of environment)
Hydrosphers, litosphere, Atmosphere, Biosphere
- all water bodies such as lakes, ponds, rivers, streams and ocean etc.
- functions in a cyclic nature, which is termed as hydrological cycle or water cycle.
Hydrosphere
- mantle of rocks constituting the earth’s crust.
- Mainly, contains soil, earth rocks, mountain etc.
Litosphere
- cover of the air
- thin layer which contains gases like oxygen, carbon dioxide etc
Atmosphere
- life layer
- all organisms on the earth’s surface and their interaction with water and air.
- It consists of plants, animals and micro-organisms
Biosphere
Five Concentric layer of atmosphere
Troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, exosphere
- 99 percent of all water vapor and aerosols.
- Most of Earth’s weather happens here
- Most aviation takes place here
Troposphere
- home to Earth’s ozone layer
- nearly cloud- and weather-free.
- highest part of the atmosphere that jet planes can reach.
Stratosphere
- top of this layer is the coldest place found within the Earth system
- noctilucent clouds, the highest clouds in Earth’s atmosphere
- Most meteors burn up
- Sounding rockets and rocket-powered aircraft
Mesosphere
- lowest part contains ionosphere.
- Cloud and water vapor free.
- aurora borealis and aurora australis are sometimes seen here. The International Space Station orbits in the thermosphere.
Thermosphere
- highest layer of Earth’s atmosphere.
- No weather at all
- the aurora borealis and aurora australis are sometimes seen in its lowest part.
- Earth satellites orbit in the exosphere.
Exosphere-
interdisciplinary academic field that integrates physical and biological sciences.
Environmental Science
Scope of Environmenta Science
environmental studies has been seen to be multidisciplinary in nature so it is considered to be a subject with great scope.
