Entomology Flashcards
What is a bioindicator?
A living organism that can tell us things about the environment that might otherwise be costly or time consuming
What is the order of classification (7)?
Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species
What is an adult insects exoskeleton made of?
Chitin
What makes a fly a fly?
- 1 wing pair
- 3 leg pairs
- 1 pair of club-shaped halteres
- sucking mouthparts
- short, segmented antennae
What makes a beetle a beetle?
- 2 wing pairs (thick forewing/elytra and membraneous hindwing)
- 3 leg pairs
What is an exopterygote?
Adult and larvae look similar
What is an endopterygote?
Adult and larvae look different
Describe the life cycle of a fly
- Imago oviposits
- Eggs hatch into larvae
- 1st instar, 2nd instar, 3rd instar larvae (moults as it grows into different stages)
- 3rd instar enter post feeding stage and move to safety to pupate
- Imago ecloses from pupae
How can you identify what instar stage a fly larvae is in?
Number of slits in posterior spiracles (1,2,3)
Describe the life cycle of a beetle
- Imago oviposits
- eggs hatch into young larvae
- larvae undergoes several moulting stages (varies)
- pupation
- imago ecloses
What is forensic entomology?
using insects to help investigate legal matters
What is urban entomology?
Involving pests in the human environment e.g. woodworm, cockroaches
What is stored product entomology?
Related to food contamination / spoilage of stored food / biosecurity
What is medico-legal entomology?
Using insects to investigate crimes/corpses
Why are insects used in medico-legal entomology?
- they’re everywhere
- corpse = lots of food
- insect development is simple/predictable
- insect habitat preference is simple/predictable
Where do insects oviposit?
Mouth, eyes, nostrils, genitals, sites of trauma
What are the 4 stages of decomposition?
- bloat
- active decay
- dry decay
- skeletonisation
What insect is the first to arrive at the scene and why?
- blowflies
- antennae very sensitive to volatile organic compounds
How far away can greenbottles sense a carcass?
6.4km
What is an example of a volatile organic compound?
Sodium sulphides
What is fly development massively dependant on?
temperature!
