What happens in the induction of Taming of the Shrew?
Christopher Sly is thrown out of an alehouse by the hostess and falls asleep. A lord come across him sleeping and decides to play a trick on him. They wash Sly and dress him in beautiful clothes. The lord instructs his servants to treat Sly as a lord and gets his page to dress up and pretend to be Sly’s wife. When Sly wakes up, he falls the trick and believes that he is a lord. The real lord gets his players to perform a play for Sly.
What happens in Act 1 of Taming of the Shrew?
Lucentio and Tranio arrive in Padua and witness baptista telling Gremio and Hortensio that Bianca can not get married until Katherina is married. Lucentio falls in love with Bianca. He vows to disguise himself as Cambio and Tranio as himself. (Scene 2) Petruchio arrives in Padua (funny colloquy between him and Grumio). It is suggested by Hortensio that he court Katherina, and Hortensio and Tranio agree to fund him.
What happens in act 2 of Taming of the Shrew?
Katherina ties up Bianca, hits her and accuses her of being fake. Petruchio is introduced to Katherina as a suitor. A witty stichomythia occurs. Petruchio suggests that everyone was lying when they said that Kat was shrewd and that she is lovely to him. He tells Baptista they will marry and Baptista, in desperation, accepts. Baptista then tells Bianca’s suitor to all make an offer for her love. Tranio wins, promising things he doesn’t have.
What happens in act 3 of Taming of the Shrew?
Lucentio and Hortensio, both disguised as teachers, compete for Bianca’s love. (Scene 2) Petruchio is late to Kate’s wedding and she runs off crying. Petruchio turns up dressed ridiculously, on a diseased horse. They leave to get married off the stage. Gremio then recounts the wedding and how Petruchio swore, hit the priest and kissed Kat inappropriately.
What happens in Act 4 of Taming of the Shrew?
Grumio arrives at Petruchio’s house and tells the other servants of how she left her in the mud. When he arrives, Petruchio makes a fuss. He reveals that this is an act in order to tame Kate. (Scene 2) Hortensio and Tranio find Lucentio and Bianca flirting and renounce Bianca. Tranio persuades a peasant to play the role of Lucentio’s father. (Scene 3) Petruchio denies Kate of food, rest or clothes and humiliates her in front of the tailor. (Scene 4) The pedant and Baptista meet, Baptista gives his blessing to Lucentio and Bianca. (Scene 5) Katherina and Petruchio travel to Padua (moon or sun scene) where she submits to him. They meet Vincentio on the way.
What happens in Act 5 of Taming of the Shrew?
Lucentio marries Bianca. Vincentio meets the pedant disguised as himself. Vincentio argues with the peasant and demands he be arrested. He also accuses Tranio of murdering his son, but Tranio calls an officer who puts Vincentio in prison. Lucentio arrives and begs his father’s forgiveness for his disguise. Petruchio refuses to keep travelling unless Kate kisses him. Kate complies. (Scene 2) A feast is held in Lucentio’s chamber. The boys place a wager to see who is the most obedient wife. Kate wins. Lucentio then vows to tame Kate.
