Act 1, scene 2:
This scene begins with Grumio and Petruchio outside Hortensio’s house.
They argue because Petruchio tells Grumio to ‘knock’ on the door and Grumio misunderstands (perhaps intentionally) and replies ‘Knock, sir? Whom should I knock? Is there any man has rebused your worship’ this then escalates when Petruchio tells Grumio to ‘knock me here soundly’ which confuses Grumio further
What is Petruchio looking to do in Padua? Why is this?
Quote
Petruchio plans to ‘To wive it wealthily in Padua; if wealthily, then happily in Padua’
Basically because he’s poor and is looking for a potential wife with a large dowry
How does Hortensio describe Kate to Petruchio?
He describes her as ‘intolerable curst and shrewd and froward, so beyond all measure’
How does Hortensio express treating women as commodities and his disdain for Kate?
‘I would not wed her for a mine of gold’
