ENT anatomy - nerves Flashcards
what happens if there is disruption to the parasympathetic supply of CN VII (facial nerve)?
disruption to lacrimal, nasal cavity, submandibular and sublingual glands
this can cause dry eyes & mucosa (vidian nerve dysfunction) and dry mouth
what happens if there is disruption to the special sensation supply of CN VII?
lack of taste in anterior 2/3 of tongue
what happens if there is disruption to the somatic motor supply of CN VII?
facial paralysis
what are the 3 branches of CNV (trigeminal nerve)?
opthalmic (CN V1)
maxillary (CN V2)
mandibular (CN V3)
what is the main sensory supply to the nasopharynx and oropharynx?
CN IX (glossopharyngeal)
what is the main sensory supply to the laryngopharynx?
CN X (vagus)
describe nerve supply to the tongue
anterior 2/3:
- CN V3 (mandibular) provides general sensory
- CN VII (facial) provides taste
posterior 1/3:
- CN IX (glossopharyngeal) provides general sensory & taste
what is the somatic motor supply of CN XII (hypoglossal)?
all muscles of the tongue that end in -glossus apart from palatoglossus
what nerve supplies the anteroinferior aspect of the internal tympanic membrane?
CN IX (glossopharyngeal)
where does the facial nerve pass through?
internal acoustic meatus
what is the nerve damaged if patient experiences dizziness, dry eyes, dry mouth, no taste in ant 2/3 of tongue
CN VII (facial)
