24) Discuss the characterization of the character of Mulan in the ancient Chinese poem, “The Ballad of Mulan.”
Mulan was definitely different from typical women in China. She was bored of living the lifestyle and completing duties that a female was expected to do. Mulan didn’t care about having a man as she was well aware that she could take care of herself and instantly when her father was announced that he’d go to war, Mulan didn’t hesitate to take his place secretly as well. This reveals how she was a brave independent woman. She was also humble. When the emperor asked Mulan what she wanted. Instead of becoming a government official, all she requested was to have a horse to head back home to her family.
25) Identify examples of the Confucian school of thought in the Disney film, Mulan.
Mulan’s Father is a perfect example of expressing confucianist ideas. In the film, Mulan pleads that her father should not go to war but her father cuts her off and tells her that he would be honored to do so despite his age, pain, and already being a war veteran. Her father wants to continue seeking his role of bringing honor to his family and protecting the Emperor and his country, revealing his loyalty as a confucianist does.
Mulan’s Grandmother talks to the ancestors when her family finds out that she has taken her fathers place in war. She prays that they protect Mulan. This reveals confucianist ideas as ancestors continue to play a role in people’s lives in guiding and protecting their present family.
