Relied on them more and gave them land and titles
Why did Henry VIII rely on the nobles?
To raise armies for his wars and to keep law and order locally

Both sought to limit the power of the nobles so they would not threaten the monarchy
What were the gentry?
Increased under Henry VIII and they were a social class of wealthy landowners who held significant status and influence
How did the gentry positions change under Henry VIII?
Drawn into unpaid administration by the crown but became richer by buying monastic lands off the Crown
How did the lives of common folk change?
little dramatic change at the start but became poorer the further into Henrys reign due to inflation going up

Difficult to police and was split into 3 marchers all under 1 warden who appointed gentry or complete outsiders to stop nobles exploiting their rule

Act of union 1536 - brought Wales into the legal framework and for 24MPs to be represented in parliament
1536 Laws of Wales Acts - divided Wales in shire counties just like England

re-established the council as a permanent body based in York with professional staff
How did the Tudors control the Palatines?
Lancashire, Durham and Cheshire had separate jurisdiction
Act of Resuming Liberties to the Crown 1536 - reduced the level of independence which led to more control for the monarchy
What religious upheaval took place and why?
people disagreed with the break from Rome and it all came to ahead with the pilgrimage of grace 1536 rebellion
Was the power of the monarchy weaker or stronger at the end of Henry VIII reign?
Weaker as they had lost crown lands to fund Henry’s war like foreign policy
