Are special ways of using words to make the language more expressive. They add color, depth, and meaning to what we say or write.
Figures of Speech
A figure of speech that compares two different things using the words “like” or “as.”
Simile
A figure of speech that directly compares two different things by saying one is the other, without using “like” or “as.”
Metaphor
A figure of speech where human characteristics are given to non-human objects, animals, or ideas.
Personification
An exaggerated statement that is not meant to be taken literally, used for emphasis or humorous effect.
Hyperbole
Two contradictory words
placed together.
EXAMPLE:
Bittersweet memories
Oxymoron
A contrast between
expectation and reality.
Irony
What are the types of Irony?
1). Verbal
2). Situational
3). Dramatic
Type of Irony where usually takes it in a sarcastic way.
Verbal
Type of Irony where the expected outcome is the complete opposite.
Situational
Type of Irony where the actor/character doesn’t know what has happened but the audience knows.
Dramatic
A polite way to say
something that might be
unpleasant.
Euphemism
A play on words, often for
humorous effect.
Pun
The repetition of a word or
phrase at the beginning of
successive clauses.
Anaphora
Addressing an absent
person or personified object as if they were present.
