Refers to creations that are written or spoken to express ideas, stories, and other universal human interests.
Literature
What are the 3 divisions of literature?
1). Poetry
2). Prose
3). Drama
Uses language to evoke
emotions, convey ideas, and
paint vivid descriptions.
Poetry
A structural element in poetry known as the single line.
Verse
Made up of many lines. It provides a way of changing the
subject or tone. It also helps create structure and flow to the ideas in the poem.
Stanzas
Give all the text features of poetry.
1). Varied in length
2). Uses sound devices
3). Takes poetic license with space, punctuation and grammar.
4). Uses lines and stanzas
It often refers to the shared sound of words at the end of two or more verses, which creates a poem’s rhythm.
Rhyme
It is the pattern of unstressed and stressed syllables. It helps create rhythm and musicality.
Meter
A type of poem where the first letter of each line spell a word, phrase, or sentence.
Acrostic Poem
A traditional form of Japanese poetry where it consists of 3 lines, the first and third line has 5 syllables, then the second line has 7 syllables.
Haiku Poem
A five line poem where lines 1 2 and 5 rhyme, while another rhyme consists of lines 3 and 4.

Limerick Poem
A line of verse containing five metric feet, each of which has:
- one stressed syllable
- one unstressed syllable
Iambic Pentameter
Tells a story, idea, or
information in sentences and
paragraphs. Its language is similar to how we communicate in real life.
Prose
What are the two classifications of Prose?
1). Fiction
2). Non-Fiction
What are the text features of Prose?
1). Written using paragraphs.
2). May contain dialogue.
3). Can be either fiction or nonfiction.
4). Can have headings and/or subheadings.
5). Can be accompanied by graphics (charts, photos).
These are the humans or animals that interact in a story.
Characters
It is the time and place where a story takes place.
Setting
It is the perspective from which the story is told.
Point of View (POV)
This refers to the sequence of events in a story.
Plot
It is the feeling or atmosphere a story conveys based on the choice of words and other elements in the story.
Mood
It is the central idea or the main message of a story.
Theme
Tells a story in prose or in verse (like in poetry). But unlike the two other genres, it is intentionally written to be presented on stage.
Drama
What are the text features of Drama?
1). Can have a list of
characters.
2). Written to be
performed.
3). Written in the form of a script (dialogue).
4). Can include directions for
costuming and physically setting a stage.
5). Can have staging
directions.
What are the forms of Drama?
1). Play
2). Skit
3). Musical
4). Opera
5). Monologue
6). Readers’ Theater
