Examples and Illustrations
-Provide an effective explanation of a topic
-An expository paragraph tries to explain a topic or situation.
-Presents main themes and ideas that will be explored later one
-Like a scene in a movie
Exposition
-Tells a story or an event.
-It could be tale, novel, an account of one’s life, natural phenomena, or social events
-Should be arranged chronologically
Narration
-Explains how to do something, how something works, or both.
-The essay opens with a discussion of the process and a thesis statement that states the outcome of the process.
Process Analysis
-Attempts to get readers to accept a point of view or the writer’s position on a topic.
Persuasion
-A sentence that states the main thought of a paragraph or of a larger unit of discourse and is usually placed at or near the beginning.
