What is a simile?
A simile is a comparison which makes use of the words ‘as’ or ‘like’
What is a metaphor?
A metaphor is a comparison which doesn’t make use of the words ‘as’ or ‘like’
What is conceit?
An unrelated comparison which may appear to not make sense , but does actually have meaning
What is a personification?
A personification gives human qualities to an object. An object may be compared to something which is human
What is an oxymoron?
Contradictory words put together, with the purpose of intensifying the point
What is an antithesis ?
Balancing something by using opposite ideas
What is a litotes?
When a negative is used to empathise a positive ( he is no fool)
What is a hyperbole?
A deliberate exaggeration which is done to empathise a point
what is a synecdoche?
When a word is used to describe another term ( south africa played new zealand )
What is alliteration?
The repetition of consonant sounds in a sentence
What is assonance?
The repetition of vowels sounds in a sentence
What is onomatopoeia?
When a word suggests the sound that it makes
What is a pun?
A pun is a play on words that are very similar in sound
What irony?
When the speaker says the opposite of what he means
What is sarcasm?
Irony which is meant to hurt
What is an innuendo?
When something is not said but implied . It is therefore hinted
What is an euphemism?
Trying to avoid saying something unpleasant by softening the truth
What is a rhetorical question?
A question which is not asked to obtain an answer but to empathise a point
What is an epigram?
A sharp pointed saying
What is an apostrophe?
An adress to an absent person or an abstract quality ( So, like when a poet talks to God)
What is climax?
The building up to the main point
What is anti climax?
The opposite of the climax
What is the tone of a poem?
The writer’s attitude towards the subject
What is the mood?
The atmosphere that the writer creates
