How does Mariam’s relationship with Zalmai change by the end of the novel?

A

Mariam didn’t have a real and tight connection with Zalmai. She didn’t have a connection with Zalmai, because Zalmai was closer to Rasheed. And Mariam had a closer relationship with Aziza. WHen Rasheed died, everything changed. Zalmai was confused after Rasheed’s death and Mariam tried to get him back on track.

How does Mariam’s self-esteem change from the beginning to the end of the novel?

A

In the beginning of the novel Mariam was used by his father. Her mother wasn’t able to take care of Mariam as well as she could have, which didn’t really help her as she grew up. Her self-esteem was very low in the beginning and was used by Rasheed, once she was forced to marry him. But as soon as Laila came into the picture, she was able to boost her self-confidence. Her confidence was brought up by Laila and was able to stand up for herself from Rasheed.

A

Some of Mariam’s strongest character traits were motherly instincts, trust, self-esteem (in the end), common sense, etc.

Why did Hurston use dialiect in her writing?

A

Hurston used dialect in her writing because it set the tone of when the story took place. It was near the Harlem Renaissance which made the speech a little different. The speech is seen through the dialect She was able to connect with the readers through her dialect as well.

A

Phoeby is the best friend of Janie in Eatonville. She gives Janie the ebenfit of the doubt when the townspeople gossip viciously about Janie. She is the audience for Janie’s story and her prescense is occasionally felt in the speech. Janie tells the story of her life to Phoeby in the story

A

The horizon symbolizes love. Nanny had taken horizon and tied it around Janie’s neck “tight enough to choke her.” Nanny had taken love and choked her. She forced Janie into marrying to a man (logan) she didn’t even find love in. Janie didn’t feel the love with Logan, but Nanny jept on wanting her to be with him. Nanny was doing something for her Janie own good, but did it primarily for her own self
