This links to most respectable Victorian gentlemen of the time.
Q: “unscientific balderdash”
A: Degrading his scientific work, as he goes against the beliefs of religion which most of society including him would have strongly believed in.
Q2: “Respectable” vs “pure evil”
A2: This highlights the character development or destruction that Jekyll experiences throughout the novella. In addition, the “evil” links him to the devil, as he corrupts himself.
C: Science vs religion-in Victorian society, those who pushed the boundaries of science, were seen as sinners to religion, as they contradicted fundamental beliefs of their religion, of which societies laws and structure were based upon.

P: He was, from a young age, forced to hide his pleasures, which only lead to them growing stronger and more desirable.
Q: “Every guarantee of an honourable and distinguishable future”
A: The idea that he had a future lined up for him, it was a “guarantee”, implies that anything other than being successful would indeed make him a failure.
Q2: “Concealed my pleasures”
A2: This highlights that he has had his desires for a long time, nut due to the concept of a perfect Victorian gentlemen he has had to “conceal” them, allowing them to fester and become even stronger.
C: Victorian gentlemen at the time, were expected to be respectable, clever and repressed. These high standards, became too strong for many to follow, so it became the norm for them to experience their pleasures, but in the more hidden and dodgy side of London; Soho.

P: Although Jekyll initially worked and desired to become Hyde, eventually the consequences of his actions as Hyde racked him, to the point at which he hated his inability to stay as himself.
Q: “morbid sense of shame” and “plentiful springs of distress”
A: His guilt is causing him to feel like death in himself, a dark image of which connotes the idea that life is no longer worthy for him. In addition the contrast between the word “springs” a joyful description that indicates new life or hope, but that is quickly dashed with the word “distressed”, which highlights that he is sinking into a pool of stress.
