- A figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid (e.g., as brave as a lion, crazy like a fox ).

Simile
a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable.
Metaphor
the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form.
Personification
exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.
Hyperbole
the expression of one’s meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.
Irony
the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words
alliteration
-Similar vowel sounds
-is a resemblance in the sounds of words/syllables either between their vowels or
between their consonants
Assonance
is the process of creating a word that phonetically
imitates, resembles, or suggests the sound that it describes
Onomatopoeia
occurs when the author of the poem repeats words or phrases to emphasize or create
rhythm.
Repetition
is a literary device that uses symbols, be they words, people, marks, locations, or abstract ideas to represent something beyond the literal meaning.
