[Matthew 6,7 scattered through Gospels] One of the three major Jewish groups in Jesus’ day, Pharisee thought that since they were descendants of Abraham they were approved by God. Intensely moralistic, drawing a hedge around the law to insure their conformity (at least outwardly) to it. Held to the oral tradition along with the Mosaic law and were Jesus’ chief opponents.

Presenting Jesus’ an-cestry, birth, and early life before moving carefully through his ministry, death and resurrection, Luke is also the most comprehensive of the Gospels.

Parable of the Sower—Matthew 13:3-9
The different types of soil represent different types of people. The parable is about the Kingdom (comes into the world in hidden form, like and seed) and primarily about Jesus who is actively sowing the word of God in his ministry. The seed retains its power but the efficacy depends on the receptivity of the soil. Prompts question, what kind of soil am I?

What are the distinctive features of Mark’s Gospel?
The idea of immediate action. Purpose: To present the person, work and teaching of Jesus—the good news (1:1) Shortest of the Gospels, tells more about the actions than the teachings of Jesus. Most of the events recorded also appear in Matthew and Luke, but Mark narrates them with greater detail and vividness. His direct, fast- moving style carries the reader swiftly to the central event of the gospel—Jesus' death and resurrection. More action/ less talk. Abrupt ending. More evangelistic
