Allegory
A story or poem or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning
Alliteration
Th occurrnce of the same letter or sound
Allusion
An expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly
Analogy
A comparison between two things typically for the purpose of explanation
Antagonist
A person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone
Anti climax
A disappointing end to an exciting or impressive series of events
Antithesis
A person or thing that is directly opposite of someone or something
Apostrophe
A punctuation mark (‘) used to indicate possession
Argumentative essay
A genre of writing that requires the student to investigate a topic
Anecdotal evidence
Evidence that is purely based on someones personal experience. It is not scientific evidence
Aside
A message that is told from a character directly to the audience
Assonance
In poetry the repetition of sound of a vowel
Atmosphere
The pervading tone or mood of a place
Autobiography
An account of a persons life written by that person
Active voice
When the verb of a sentence is in the active voice. Meaning the person or thing is caring out that action
