The BOLD FACE steps for THE BIG 4 are:
- NR
- AIRSPEED/ALTITUDE
- WHEELS/FLOATS
- ANALYZE
Possible symptoms:
- DIF N1 aural warning.
- DIF N1 warning light illuminated.
- NR droop.
- low NR horn.
- Abnormal engine parameters.
- TRQ, TOT, N1, and N2 decreasing.
- as engine spools down, additional symptoms will become evident (e.g. generator failure, ENG OIL P warning light, and engine status light).
- FLI switches to OEI mode.
- ECS disengages.
10 Bleed air shuts off.
SINGLE-ENGINE FAILURE INFLIGHT TO INCLUDE: LOW HOVER, HIGH HOVER, AND TAKEOFF/LANDING TRANSITION
Corrective Action:
- COMPLETE THE BIG 4.
If suitable landing area is immediately available:
2. ASSUME LANDING ATTITUDE, ELIMINATE YAW, AND DRIFT PRIOR TO TOUCHDOWN.
If suitable landing area is not immediately available:
- COLLECTIVE - ADJUST TO MAXIMUM POWER, MAINTAIN NR ABOVE 345 RPM.
- AIRSPEED - CLIMB AT Vx OR Vy.
- NR/OEI - SET AS NECESSARY.
- ANALYZE.
Possible symptoms:
- DIF N1 aural warning.
- DIF N1 warning light illuminated.
- NR droop.
- low NR horn.
- Abnormal engine parameters.
- TRQ, TOT, N1, and N2 decreasing.

FLAMEOUT
Corrective Action:
- COMPLETE THE BIG 4.
- FCS (affected engine) - CONFIRM; IDLE CONFIRM; OFF.
- boost pumps (affected engine) - OFF.
- TOT - monitor for post shutdown fire.
- OEI - set as necessary.
- FUEL - transfer/jettison as required.
- land as soon as practicable.
If the situation warrants and time permits:
8. restart engine inflight - complete
Possible symptoms:
- N2 significantly above NR.
- zero TRQ on malfunctioning engine.
- loud noises from the engine area.
- DIF N1 aural warning.
- DIF N1 warning light illuminated.
- NR droop.
- low NR horn.
ENGINE GEAFRBOX/OUTPUT SHAFT FAILURE
Corrective action:
- COMPLETE THE BIG 4.
- FCS (affected engine) - CONFIRM; IDLE CONFIRM; OFF.
- boost pumps (affected engine) - OFF.
- TOT - monitor for post shutdown fire.
- OEI - set as necessary.
- FUEL - transfer/jettison as required.
- land as soon as practicable.
Possible symptom:
- ENG 1 OIL P or ENG 2 OIL P warning light illuminated with engine oil pressure decreasing or reading zero.
- engine oil pressure fluctuates, increases, or decreases abnormally.
- engine oil pressure less than 25 psi.
- engine status light illuminated.
ENGINE LUBRICATION SYSTEM FAILURE
Corrective Action:
- COMPLETE THE BIG 4.
- FCS (AFFECTED ENGINE) - CONFRIM; IDLE, CONFIRM; OFF.
- boost pumps (affected engine) - OFF.
- TOT - monitor for post shutdown fire.
- OEI - set as necessary.
- FUEL - transfer/jettison as required.
- land as soon as practicable.
Symptoms:
- ENG 1 CHIP or ENG 2 CHIP warning light illuminated.
- ENGINE CHIP annunciation on VEMD caution/fuel page.
ENGINE CHIP DETECTED
Corrective Action:
- COMPLETE THE BIG 4.
- FCS (AFFECTED ENGINE) - CONFIRM; IDLE.
If ABNORMAL IDLE indication:
- FCS ( AFFECTED ENGINE) - CONFIRM; OFF.
- boost pumps (affected engine) - OFF.
- TOT - monitor for post shutdown fire.
- OEI - set as required
- FUEL - transfer at necessary.
- land as soon as practicable.
If NORMAL IDLE indications:
3. land as soon as practicable.
*NOTE* If additional power is required for landing, FCS may be switched to FLT.
Possible symptoms:
- Popping or rumbling noises.
- TOT increases/fluctuates.
- TRQ and N1 decrease.
- Airframe vibration/shuddering
ENGINE SURGE OR COMPRESSOR STALL INFLIGHT
Corrective Action:
- COMPLETE THE BIG 4.
If ABNORMAL ENGINE indications and affected engine can be identified.
- FCS (AFFECTED ENGINE) - CONFIRM; IDLE.
If ABNORMAL IDLE indications:
- FCS ( AFFECTED ENGINE) - CONFIRM; OFF.
- boost pumps (affected engine) - OFF.
- TOT - monitor for post shutdown fire.
- OEI - set as required
- FUEL - transfer at necessary.
- land as soon as practicable.
NOTE
If additional power is required for landing, FCS may be switched to FLT.
If NORMAL ENGINE indications or affected engine cannot be identified.
- land as soon as practicable.
Possible symptoms:
- Popping or rumbling noises.
- TOT increases/fluctuates.
- TRQ and N1 decrease.
- Airframe vibration/shuddering
ENGINE SURGE OR COMPRESSOR STALL ONDECK
Corrective Action:
- FCS (AFFECTED ENGINE) - OFF.
- boost pumps (affected engine) - OFF.
- TOT - monitor for post shutdown fire.
Symptoms:
- DIF N1 warning light illuminated.
- DIF N1 aural warning.
- Possible NR droop.
- Low NR horn.
- OEI GOV mode on VEMD.
- N1 difference between both engines is greater than 6%.
N1 DIVERGANCE/PARTIAL POWER LOSS
Corrective Action:
- COMPLETE THE BIG 4.
- land as soon as practicable.
Symptoms:
- FADEC 1 FAIL or FADEC 2 FAIL caution light illuminated.
- Engine status light.
- OEI GOV mode page displayed.
- Affected engine will not respond to collective movement due to the fuel flow metering being frozen at the rate present when the FADEC failure.
MAJOR FADEC/GOVERNOR FAILURE (LEVEL 3)
Corrective Action:
1. COMPLETE THE BIG 4. 2 TRNG SWITCH - FLT. 3. FADEC BACKUP SWITCH (AFFECTED ENGINE) - CONFIRM; BACKUP. 4. OEI - set as necessary. 5. land as soon as practicable.
Symptom:
- GOV caution light illuminated.
Possible symptoms:
- FLI DEGR annunciation on the VEMD.
- TRQ, TOT, N1 value missing with TRQ, TOT, or N1 label in boldface yellow type.
- One or both VEMD screens fail.
- No Bingo annunciation on CDU
- LANE 1/2 FAILED - PRESS OFF 1/2.
- Cross talk failed - PRESS OFF 1/2.
- STAT page FAIL line: BARO
MINOR FADEC/GOVERNOR FAILURE (LEVEL 2)
Corrective Action:
- COMPLETE THE BIG 4.
- If both VEMD screens fail, avoid high power settings and reference placard for collective pitch settings.
- abort mission.
Symptom:
- Fail code on VEMD system status page.
FADEC FAILURE (LEVEL 1)
Corrective Action:
- Continue flight as appropriate.
Symptom:
- OIL TEMP warning light illuminated AND increase in ENG 1 and/or ENG 2 oil temperature on the VEMD above 115 degrees Celsius.
*NOTE* If OIL TEMP warning light illuminated with no secondary treat as MGB INDICATING SYSTEM FAILURE.
ENGINE OVERHEAT
Corrective Action:
- Cruise airspeed - 120 KIAS minimum.
If one engine has an overheat, consideration should be given to bringing the affected engine to idle.
- land as soon as practicable.
- shutdown engines as soon as possible.
ENGINE SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE INFLIGHT:
- COMPLETE THE BIG 4.
- FCS (affected engine) - CONFIRM; IDLE, CONFIRM; OFF.
- boost pumps (affected engine) - OFF.
- TOT - monitor for post shutdown fire.
- OEI - set as necessary.
RESTARTING ENGINE INFLIGHT PROCEDURE:
Corrective Action:
- heat - OFF.
- ESFL - ensure forward.
- boost pumps - on.
- Check N1 less than 17%.
- Perform normal start procedure.
If engine start successful:
6. land as soon as practicable.
If engine restart fails:
- FCS (affected engine) - OFF.
- boost pumps (affected engine) - OFF.
- TOT - monitor for post shutdown fire.
- OEI - set as required.
- FUEL - transfer/jettison as required.
- land as soon as practicable.
