Engine and Associated Systems Flashcards
What kind of engine does the DA40 have?
A Lycoming IO-360-M1A
Describe the basics of the engine
An air cooled four-cylinder four-stroke direct drive engine that is horizontally opposed and fuel injected
What does horizontally opposed mean?
The cylinders are located on each side of the crankshaft
What is the maximum HP at sea level and standard atmospheric conditions?
180HP at 2700 RPM
On the right side of the cowling, what does the airflow help with?
Cylinder head cooling, alternator & battery cooling, oil cooling, and cabin heating
What kind of fuel pumps does the aircraft have?
Both mechanical and electric fuel pumps
When should each fuel pump be used?
The mechanical pump is used for fuel supply during normal operations. The electric fuel pump is pilot controlled using a switch and should be turned on during engine start, takeoff & landing, and when switching fuel tanks
Describe the fuel selector
The selector is used to choose a fuel tank. It has 3 positions: Left, Right, and Off. Off is reached by turning the selector to the right while simultaneously pulling up the safety catch.
How are standard fuel tanks constructed?
Each standard fuel tank has a total of two aluminum chambers connected by flexible hose and dual vent hoses
What is the maximum fuel quantity for each standard tank?
20 US gallons
What is the maximum difference allowed between each standard tank?
10 US gallons
What is the maximum quantity of fuel that can be shown on the indicators for a standard tank?
17 US gallons
How can you determine the exact quantity of fuel if there’s more than 17 US gallons in a standard tank?
A fuel measuring device
Describe the long range fuel tank construction
Each long range tank has 3 aluminum chambers, all connected by pieces of flexible hose and dual vent hoses
What is the fuel quantity for long range tanks?
25 US Gallons each
