Engagement Defined:
“The process of establishing the client-worker relationship” (p. 177)
The first step in a planned change process
The relationship is an absolute requisite for successful practice
Professional Worker-Client Relationships are Characterized by:
A clear purpose
A commitment to meeting client needs → not reciprocal it’s about meeting the client you’re not using your client to meet your needs
Ethical standards of practice
Worker emphasis on communicating warmth, genuineness, and empathy → the way you talk (your mom vs your client)

Assessment Defined
“Involves defining the problem, identifying contributing factors, and recognizing what can be done to reduce or eliminate the problem” (p. 180)
“The process of gathering and organizing data and information in order to arrive at an accurate picture of the person-in-environment situation” (p. 177)
How to Approach Assesment
1) Involvement of the client is absolutely essential
2) Assessment always involves making judgments, sometimes with insufficient or incomplete information
3) Focus on Strengths
4) A single clear definition of the problem may not exist
5) Assessment is a continuous activity
Goals of Assesment:
1) Achieve a clear understanding of the need, problem, or situation that will be the focus of work with the client
2) Recognize the strengths, assets, skills, and abilities that clients bring
3) Formulate a clear description of the client system
4) Understand the client system’s interactions with other systems
5) Identify any missing information that is important
6) Put all the information together to help decide whether intervention is best approached from a micro, mezzo, or macro perspective
