COGNITIVE-BEHAVIOURAL THEORY Flashcards
Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) share some underlying principles:
Both recognize that people’s thoughts and beliefs can contribute to emotional and behavioural problems.
Therefore, changing one’s thinking can lead to emotional and behavioural change; it may not be an event that causes the problem, but rather our thinking about the event.
Both therapies have been extensively studied and their effectiveness in counseling established.
REBT is
broader in scope and includes a philosophical component (e.g., unconditional self-acceptance; sees some negative emotions as unhelpful such as anger, teaches individuals to be appropriately assertive versus moving from thoughts to emotion of anger).
CBT is more commonly used by _____
therapists
recognizes that emotions are________; but strong emotional reactions can lead to mental health problems.
normative
“REBT argues that strong emotional reactions are often the result of a __________
person believing that something ‘must’, ‘should’ or ‘ought’ to happen”
“REBT claims that
people are burdened with a sense of ‘musts’ and ‘shoulds’. However, we have a choice and individuals can select alternative attitudes that are more rational”
_________ ABCDEF process provides a useful framework for letting go of irrational or dysfunctional thoughts and beliefs, and replacing them with functional ones
Albert Ellis’
ABCDEF process stands for
A = Activating experience
B = What beliefs people have about themselves as a result of A
C = The consequences to clients from A
D = Dispute the beliefs and question whether they are rational
E = Replace the irrational belief with an effective rational belief
F = Describe the feelings which will be the result of these beliefs
“CBT is founded ________
on the idea that our thoughts (cognitions) have an effect on our behaviours (both positive and negative)
