Trends to Participation
10% more men regularly participate then women.
Participation decreases with age and drops considerably with the over 70’s—56% of 16-25 year olds once a week compared to 32% over 26 year olds.
Minority ethnic groups increasing—37% over sixteen year olds once a week.
Participation rates for people with disabilities are much lower than others but are increasing each year - 17% participate regularly.
Most participation rates are amongst managerial/professional workers and least participation rates are amongst manual/unemployed people.
5 most popular sports in 2015 were: Walking, swimming, fitness (aerobics etc), cycling, cue sports (snooker etc)
Strategies for Improving Participation
Promotion
Increase awareness of sporting opportunities. eg Advertising a club or activity
Provision
Ensuring the correct level of equipment, facilities and coaching are available. Eg ensuring that a school or leisure centre run a wide range of extra curricular activities
Access
Ensuring that people can actively engage with physical activity. Eg being able to get to an activity or having the correct facilities available
